People who are obese faced a doubled risk of losing their sight, according to the Royal National Institute for the blind.
The RNIB said obese people faced two dangers. One is from macular degeneration, caused by oxidative damage and aggravated by poor vitamin levels caused by too much fat. The second is from diabetes which causes a condition called retinopathy.
To safeguard sight the RNIB recommends people maintain a healthy weight, eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, take exercise to improve general heath, don't smoke and most importantly have regular eye tests.
Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have "pre-diabetes". Some long term damage to the body, especially the heart and circulatory system, may already be occurring during pre-diabetes.
If you take action and make lifestyle changes, you can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes. Take action now. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of vision loss.
